Kayaking and Canoeing
Low Port can offer a wide range of paddling experiences to satisfy anyone's needs. With an extensive range of kayaks and canoes including general purpose, play boats, river boats and touring kayaks and royalex canoes, Low Port can offer everything from taster sessions on the picturesque loch to full on adventures on the river! Junior Courses For young people from 8 up to 16 years of age. These courses will start on the Linlithgow Loch or Union Canal, but can progress up to paddling on Loch Lomond, paddling down the River Tay or paddling out on the Firth of Forth. During the summer we run Level 1 to Level 4 courses for young people. These tend to follow the Scottish Canoe Association Rainbow Awards, with beginners on the Level 1 course staying local and trying to achieve the red and yellow awards. The Level 2 course will progress their skills attempting to gain their pink and green awards and possibly venturing further afield with day trips on the canal or Loch Lomond. Those attending the Level 3 course will be able to use their skills to go kayaking out on the Forth Estuary or down the River Tay. For the past few summers we have run a 3 day level 4 kayak course based on the River Awe, this normally includes an over-night camp. We can also run multi-day expeditions throughout Scotland. Adult Courses British Canoe Union Star Awards During 2007, the BCU updated its Star Award scheme. 1 and 2 star Awards This is an introductory course that will show you the basics you need to get started. You will receive coaching in a variety of kayaks and in open canoes. The 2 star award is a pre-requisit for the new BCU (UKCC) Level 1 Coach Award. 3 star Award The new 3 star is a boat/environment specific award and aims to improve your skills towards intermediate standard. At Low Port we can offer 3 star training and assessment in either whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking or canoeing. It is also a pre-requisit for the new BCU (UKCC) Level 2 Coach Award. BCU (UKCC) Coaching Awards As well as revamping the performance awards in 2007, the BCU, have also restructured the Coaching Award scheme under the umbrella of the United Kingdom Coaching Certificate (UKCC). We can still offer the 'old style' level 2 coach assessment for people who have already attended a training course, but for those who are new to the coaching scheme we are planning to run training and assessment courses for the new BCU (UKCC) Level 1 Coach Award. Further information on UKCC can be found on the British Canoe Union web site Foundation Safety and Rescue Course This introductory course aims to provide paddlers with the necessary safety awareness and rescue skills which will enable them to ensure their own safety and that of others in a flat water environment. It is also a pre-requisit for those wishing to become a Paddlesports Coach. White Water Safety & Rescue Course This practical course provides training in simple and safe rescue techniques and survival skills in a river environment. Aquatic First Aid This one day course provides the basic knowledge and skills to deal with the majority of first aid incidents that could arise whilst canoeing on sheltered or moderate water. It includes issues such as dealing with an unconcious casualty, CPR, bleeding, fractures, drowning and hypothermia. Full course outlines can be found on the British Canoe Union web site Other Courses Multi-day Trips The centre offers a couple of different opportunities to experience multi-day trips. Depending on your preferred choice of craft you could be exploring the islands of Loch Lomond by canoe or touring kayak, descending the classic River Tay or Spey by kayak or canoe or exploring the unique Scottish coastline by touring kayak. The choice is yours! Family Days These are pleasant days out for all the family, either floating on the loch or meandering along the canal. For Schools and Youth Groups We are able to offer kayaking and canoeing as half day or full day introductory sessions. By arrangement we can organise multi-day trips or certificated BCU courses to be run over a number of days.
