Climbing

One of Low Port's most popular activities, climbing was originally a summer activity but, with the building of the indoor climbing wall at the centre, we are able to offer climbing all year round.

For two evenings per week over the winter the indoor wall is open to members of the public who are competent in basic rope work.

Increasingly popular are our climbing wall birthday parties available at most times of the year.

Venues

We regularly visit most of the local crags such as Aberdour, Craigmore, Traprain and Benny Beg as well as quarries at Blackford, Rosyth and Auchenstarry. During the summer we often organise extended day trips down to crags in Northumberland.

Junior Courses

During our summer activity programme we run a number of climbing courses for children aged 10 yrs+. Climbing is also offered as an activity as part of our popular 12 yrs+ multi-activity courses.

Climb 1

For those with little or no previous experience. Possibly following a short introductory session on our indoor wall, you'll head out to visit some of the easier local crags around the central belt. We'll teach you how to climb and 'hold the rope' for another climber, we may even squeeze in an abseiling session as well.

Climb 2

You'll revisit some of the venues used in Climb 1 where we'll encourage you to 'push the grade' and reach new heights! Where possible we aim to spend one of the days visiting a venue that will be new to you.

Climb 3

For those who have performed well at Climb 2, this is normally an extended day trip down to one of the many crags dotted around Northumberland.

Family Rock Climbing

A one day introductory course for children and parents.  Depending on the weather you'll spend the day on either our indoor wall or outdoors on one of the local crags.  You instructor will teach you how to put on your harness, tie into it and safely belay another climber.  Each parent can bring along up to 2 children.  Previous climbing experience is not necessary.

Adult Courses

Climbing Wall Induction

For those with little or no previous experience, this is a 3 hour course which will teach you the basic skills required to use the Low Port wall safely at one of our public sessions. Your instructor will cover how to put on a harness and how to belay another climber. Ideal for parents of children who have attended one of our summer climbing courses and who are looking to do a bit more climbing.

Introduction to Outdoor Climbing

Fed up of being stuck climbing indoors? Why not spend a day putting your skills to the test at one of the many crags or quarries found around the central belt. All we ask is that applicants have climbed on an indoor wall, can belay confidently and can tie in to a harness.

Learning to Lead Climb

Been climbing for a while and looking to take the next step in your climbing career, then this is the course for you.  The course will normally start on our indoor wall and then progress outdoors to look at leader placed protection and selecting anchors for a belay to bring up your partner.  You should be a competent indoor climber and ideally have climbed outdoors prior to the course although this is not essential.

For School and Groups

We are able to offer indoor climbing as a half day or full day introductory session. Outdoor climbing can only be offered as a full day activity due to travelling time to venues. By arrangement we may be able to offer a morning indoors followed by an afternoon outside.
